A glossy black and white photograph of Tullio Vicentini and his family taken in Lincoln Heights. Tullio is standing on the far right, with his father Mareo Ilario and his mother Ottilia Vicentini to the left of him. There are five other adults and one small child posing in the picture. They are standing in a yard in front of a white house. Mareo Ilario Vicentini and Ottilia (maiden name: Caresia) Vicentini were husband and wife, and were both born in Trento, Italy. They had 4 children (Elda, Lina, Silvia, and Tullio), who were all born in La Plata, Argentina. The family settled in the Italian American enclave of Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles. Born to Italian immigrants, Tullio enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II and was deployed to the Philippines. In 1942, Tullio was captured and sent to a prisoner of war camp. After being imprisoned for over 900 days, one of the longest captivities recorded, Tullio died on October 24, 1944, when friendly fire hit the ship transporting him and 1,700 other POWs. His parents later received the Purple Heart that Tullio had been awarded posthumously. |
