A photograph taken in 1926 of C. Scottini Groceries and the owners' living quarters at 6524 South San Pedro St., Los Angeles, California. In front of the building, Cecilia Scottini and Christian Scottini are standing in front of the automobile. Seated on the bumper are their children, Antonio and Cecilia P. Behind the wheel of the automobile is Fortunato Gerola, who had just immigrated to America in 1923. The store was owned by Christiano Scottini, the uncle of Fortunato Gerola. Scottini was listed as Fortunato's sponsor when he immigrated to the U.S. in 1923. Scottini took a photo of Fortunato behind this grocery store on October 7th, the day after his arrival to Los Angeles. The store and residence were built in 1913 and contained a 1,200 sq ft portion for the store floor and a 720 sq ft living quarters consisting of a living room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and service porch. A 96 sq ft bedroom was added in 1924, the year after Fortunato arrived from Italy. This addition was shared by Fortunato and Antonio. The day before this photo was taken, which was a Saturday, Fortunato had purchased a new Ford in Hollywood although he had no driving experience. The salesman had him drive around the block a few times and then sent him on his way. He then drove from Hollywood to his residence. This photo was taken the next day, on Sunday. Shortly after purchasing the car, Fortunato built a 2 car garage facing 66th Street using discarded lumber from a 66th Street School building that was being demolished. Some companies paid to have products advertised on the side of the store. On the building itself, there are advertisements for M.J.B. Coffee, Golden Nugget Fudge, and Rex-Nut Margarine "Made Fresh Daily in Los Angeles." The awning advertises that they sell cigars. |
