Description |
A Richfield gas station in Highland Park on the corner of York Blvd. and Mt. Pleasant Street. (Although the main building is still there, it is currently known as the Ball Clay Studio.) Joseph C. Balsamo (1911-1990) is the man standing, examining a gas pump and nozzle. Another man is wiping down a display case of Richlube Motor Oils. According to the clock in the window, it is 11:55. Balsamo owned this station from the mid 1940s until 1960, when he bought another station east of this location. He was president of the Highland Park Optimist club. He was a member of that club for many years and was very active in the community. This photo originally appeared, with others, in the LA Times. Various signs say: "New Richfield Ethyl" "Suburbanites Goodyear Tires" "8 cent tax" "Sani Clean Restrooms" |
