Description |
The hat from a wedding dress ensemble consisting of a pink silk hat, bodice, overskirt, and skirt. The hat has adornments on top that resemble berries and flowers. There are three ribbons and mesh extending from the side and back of the hat. The wedding ensemble belonged to Marianna Giordano, who was born circa 1860s in Sicily, Italy, and died after 1913 in U.S. Giordano married Luigi Rivoli, who was the son of a sulfur mine owner. The mine was located in Valguarnera Caropepe, a commune in the province of Enna, Sicily. The couple had 8 children: Giuseppe (who became a priest), Filippo, Antonio, Grazia, Giovanna, Eleanora, Salvatrice, and Giuliamina (of Guglielmina) who is the grandmother of the donor. Luigi died young. (He fell off a horse.) The Rivoli family tried to maintain the mine after he died, but the mafia was relentless in its attempts to take it over. Marianna and the children moved to New York City in 1913. She brought the wedding dress with her. |
