Applied for U.S. citizenship on 10/10/1940. Declared enemy alien following the U.S.'s entry into World War II. Interned at Camp Forrect, Tennessee, Fort MacAlester, Oaklahoma, Fort Missoula, Montana, and Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Fordellone fought for Italy in WWI. Although the U.S. and Italy were on the "same side" during WWI, Fordellone and the Associazione Italiana Ex-Combattenti (an Italian veterans' group) were looked at with suspicion. The U.S. governement assumed that their sympathy and loyalty rested with Italy, and they were, therefore, potential subversives. The Ex-Combattenti remained active (as an organization) in Los Angeles until the 1990s. |
